If you've never heard of the Gene Upshaw Award, then you have probably never heard of David Bass. Because this baby has the potential to be a late-round grab in the 2013 NFL draft that is an error. Bass was a finalist for the recognition, that is given out to the very best lineman in Division II. You'll notice at the end that I've Bass going more than most other draftniks (six or later). Keep reading to find out why. Talents Bass is just a stable player with impressive speed (4.82 at the combine, 4.69 at his pro day) and great horizontal quickness. His 4.33 moments in the 20-yard shuttle was the fourth-best time at the blend for defensive ends, which was faster than super freaks Dion Jordan and Barkevious Mingo. On the subject, he is an all-natural pass-rusher. Bass used his agility and speed to report the absolute most carriers in Missouri Western State background (39.5) and was extremely durable (50 consecutive starts). Flaws Any Division II player will face issues concerning the competition, but he did maintain his own in the East-West Shrine game. Bass lacks of technical techniques. He closes with speed, but remains in order, which allowed those ridiculous sack numbers to be racked up by him. Against the Run One of Bass' main tasks was to guard the edge and material the work, and he did so quite nicely. He is able to stay static in position and read plays effectively. Treating If Bass gets his hands on a ball-carrier, that person is certainly going down, because of his big, powerful hands. But, he has a tendency ahead in excessive, which may lead to problems against better competition. Utilization of Hands Bass coasted a touch too much in school, meaning since he can count on his natural ability to avoid them he didn't will have to use his arms to fight off blockers. However, the record shows a player capable of using his arms when necessary to get off blocks, so he probably only needs some fine-tuning. Furthermore, watch the plays where he picks off a pass or rips the ball from the quarterback's torso while sacking him. Allow me to function as the first to express that he has "versatile hands." Structure Versatility/Future Part This is actually the biggest problem concerning Bass. I'd prefer to see him hold his speed and quickness by moving to a 3-4 dash linebacker, in the place of bulking as much as turn into a 4-3 end.
