Southampton vs. Chelsea: Blues Lacking Strength in Depth

When the teams were announced at St. Mary's on Saturday, Southampton must have been rubbing their hands together with glee at the thought of facing the Chelsea lineup Rafa Benitez had put out.

With an FA Cup quarterfinal replay against Manchester United following just two days later—while also taking Thursday's Europa League clash with Rubin Kazan into consideration—something had to give for the Blues and this fixture was it.

Of the starting XI, there were just five who could be considered vital, established first-team players. Peter Cech, Frank Lampard, John Terry, John Mikel Obi and Branislav Ivanovic have long been part of the fabric at Stamford Bridge, but beyond them on Saturday, Chelsea lacked any real authority.

Fernando Torres' struggles are well-documented, while Victor Moses, Ryan Bertrand, Cesar Azpilicueta and Marko Marin are not yet the stars they have the potential to be.

The sight of Oscar's endeavors as part of the attacking three behind the striker pretty much summed up the afternoon, as the Blues battled for supremacy but without any real conviction.

In some ways, this outing on the south coast reflected a cup game more than anything. As the underdog, Saints had sniffed out weaknesses in their weakened opponents and, with a passionate home crowd behind them, did just enough to come out on top, 2-1.

It was a fine win for the Premier League strugglers, yet as much as it outlined their desire to remain in the top flight, the victory was also a stark reminder of Chelsea's shortcomings this term.

Benitez has come in for some criticism following his team selection, and as manager, the Spaniard will shoulder his share of blame for a defeat many will consider a major upset.

It's not as simple as that, though, and shouldn't be considered as such, either. In the closing stages of the season, Chelsea find themselves in a difficult position.

On one hand, the Blues have it all to play for, fighting on all three fronts in the Premier League, FA Cup and Europa League. But while it may be exciting, it's equally unnerving as the fixture congestion their cup campaigns bring could very well mean they end the season empty-handed. No top-four spot, no FA Cup and no Europa League trophy.

Benitez is trying to achieve this with a threadbare squad. While the Blues look strong in numbers, they lack the experience to capitalize on the situation in which they find themselves.

It comes back to this notion of transition, and while their squad list may read like a who's who of fantasy football, the reality is it's all come a little too early for them.

Beyond the usual suspects at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea are dealing with players expected to be the heroes of the next generation, but nonetheless, players who have to prove themselves.

Saturday outlined that much and while they will learn from defeat, this season could very well have come too early for them.

Super Bowl 2013 Halftime Show: How Beyonce Erased Lip-Sync Disaster

Singer Beyonce gave a fantastic halftime performance at Super Bowl XLVII and helped erase the memory of her lip-sync disaster.

The aforementioned disaster occurred during President Obama's inauguration ceremony when it was discovered that she didn't actually perform her beautiful rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" live.

The truth came to light after a rep for the United States Marine Band spilled the beans, per Melissa Cronin of the New York Post:

Beyonce Knowles' flawless performance of "The Star Spangled Banner" at the inauguration was entirely lip-synched, Page Six has confirmed. A rep for the United States Marine Band revealed that she decided to perform to a pre-recorded track at the last minute.

"I practice until my feet bleed and I did not have time to rehearse with the orchestra," she said. "Due to no proper sound check, I did not feel comfortable taking a risk. It was about the president and the inauguration, and I wanted to make him and my country proud, so I decided to sing along with my pre-recorded track, which is very common in the music industry. And I'm very proud of my performance."

That was a tough pill to swallow for many people because Beyonce's rendition was so moving when it was performed that day. It brought a certain level of shame to her career that otherwise never existed, but the Super Bowl was her chance to make up for that.

Beyonce sang a few of her classic hits such as "Crazy in Love" and "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)," while busting some impressive dance moves. What's more important is that Beyonce hit all the notes she needed to and we got a great taste of that strong voice we've all come to know and love.

Not only did Beyonce keep up with the fast pace of some of her songs, she was also able to slow it down and really stretch her lyrics, which is when she shines the most.

A surprise aspect of her performance—although some had already speculated it would happen—was when she brought out the members of her old group, Destiny's Child.

The three women sang together for a good amount of time, but Beyonce's voice took over her former mates and she stood out far beyond what Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams could produce vocally.

The debacle at the president's inauguration was certainly a black eye for her career, but Beyonce came out on Super Bowl Sunday like a woman on a mission and took her talents to another level just in time for one of the biggest performances of her life.

Sure, there were plenty of people who watched the president's inauguration, but the Super Bowl is by far the biggest television event of any year and has far more viewers. That made it all the more important that Beyonce knock this show out of the park.

If she were an athlete, the word "clutch" would have come to mind. Beyonce needed to step up in a big spot to make up for her errors of the past and she did just that.

Winners League quarter-final preview: Barcelona, Real Madrid, Dortmund and Juventus targeting semi-final berths

The Champions League returns next week, with ten groups still in the search to help make the final at Wembley in May. A number of high-profile edges have now been removed, including Manchester United, City and protecting winners Chelsea, however a bunch of leading European clubs still remain. The four fixtures drawn are all fascinating match-ups, without merging any of the tournament favourites together. With the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich still in the hunt, and the growing power of teams like Paris Saint-Germain, Malaga and Borussia Dortmund, and enthralling quarter-final line-up is waiting for you. Paris Saint-Germain vs Barcelona Despite a in early March that saw them beaten twice by Real Madrid and once by AC Milan at the San Siro, Barcelona remain one of many favourites to carry the trophy in 2013. The Catalan side overcame their scare in Italy with a comprehensive 4-0 win in the next leg of these last 16 link contrary to the Rossoneri. PSGas new-found wealth is starting to reap rewards, with the French capital-city side top of Ligue 1 and starting to check just like a threat in Europe. Carlo Ancelottias star-studded side discarded veteran European side Valencia in the last 16, but their next clash will test precisely how much they've come, and whether they are prepared to mix it with the best clubs on the place. The first leg with this tie will undoubtedly be performed at the Parc des Princes, and it's essential that PSG gain their property leg should they stand any possibility of development to the semi-finals. Even then, as Milan found out, going to Camp Nou is a ask, and the Parisian rearguard will need to be encouraged to contain a dangerous Barcelona attack. It is difficult to look past Barcelona for this tie, as property baseball and their attacking play must certanly be a lot of for PSG to take care of. The French side should be commended because of their efforts to make it this far, nevertheless the Catalans have eyes on a domestic and European increase. Bayern Munich vs Juventus Perhaps the tie of the round, Bayern Munich and Juventus have already been relatively comfortable within their development to this point, and will look to lay down a statement of intention with success here. Bayern are still hurting from their defeat to Chelsea in the ultimate of the Champions League last phrase, and have come out fighting in 2012/13. With a domestic Bundesliga name all but wrapped up and scintillating type on the place, the Bavarians will need some beating now round. The 3-1 make an impression on Arsenal in England within the last few round revealed what Die Roten are designed for, and with Pep Guardiola assuming the Allianz Arena hotseat next season it's an interesting time to be described as a Bayern Munich fan. Juventus have gone about effectively and their business scientifically this period, and have placed themselves in a position to retrieve their Serie A top. In the Champions League a commanding effectiveness against Celtic in Scotland guaranteed development for this point, and a 3-0 home win over Chelsea in the groups stands apart. Having said that, the tie against Bayern will be a step up for the Bianconeri. The champions with this link should be deemed as an actual competitor for the whole opposition, and Bayern is likely to be small favourites given the direction they have been playing. However, Juventus have shown conventional Italian doggedness throughout the last 18 months, and with a very gifted midfield, may just edge the tie. Malaga compared to Borussia Dortmund A conflict of the wild cards, Malaga and Borussia Dortmund have overcome numerous obstacles to just take their rightful invest the past ten, and this link must be full of attacking fascinating and purpose play. Malagaas achievements this season are created all their financial problems were given by the more spectacular in the summertime, and after the sale of Jose Rondon and Santi Cazorla along side it from La Rosaleda were being written down. However Manuel Pellegrini spent some time working wonders. The Spanish side topped their Champions League class unbeaten at the first-time of asking, and transformed an energetic Porto team to really make the last nine. Last season was struggled to make an impact in Europe by dortmund after winning the Bundesliga at a, but Jurgen Kloppas men have already been a hardcore customer in this seasonas opposition. Leading the Group of Death against Real Madrid, Manchester City and Ajax, the German champions then outplayed the dangerous Shakhtar Donetsk in the round of 16. Supremely talented and damaging in attack, Dortmund fans are dreaming of a repeat of the 1997 heroics in lifting Europeas top trophy. Malaga may put up a strong-willed fight in the very first leg at home, but Dortmund needs to have too much in the return leg in Germany. Famous brands Mario Gotze, Marco Reus and Mats Hummels are earth stars in the building, and Dortmund must progress with a solid house showing. True Madrid compared to Galatasaray Real Madridas slow start to the season has been set well and truly to their rear, and Jose Mourinhoas men have come into form at just the right time. Consecutive victories over Clasico opponents Barcelona and the removal of Manchester United from the Champions League have now been Los Blancosa standout activities of the plan. Galatasaray have obtained their mantle as Turkeyas top team under Fatih Terem, and with a wealth of skilled international people complementing interesting homegrown ability, really are a difficult team to face. The intelligent January acquisitions of Didier Drogba and Wesley Sneijder present that the Turks are eager to obtain back again to their former principal selves, and an setting at the Turk Telekom Arena awaits Madrid. Despite Galatasarayas improvement and extraordinary elimination of Schalke in the last round, it is hard to look past Madrid for the link. His side will be urged by mourinho as a contest in the first leg at the Santiago Bernabeu to finish the link, and the Turks will believe it is hard to contain the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and organization.

Newspaper Cruelly Taunts Both Patriots And Cardinals Fans With Tom Brady Trade Scenario That Will Never Happen

The New England Patriots went 12-4 this year. They entered the season a Super Bowl favorite, and they reached the AFC Championship, still a Super Bowl favorite. They had a lackluster game against a Baltimore Ravens team that has given them lots of trouble, recently. The Ravens were underdogs, but they pulled the upset.

How can the Patriots fix their (minor) problems? By trading their best player, one of the best players of all-time at the most important position in the game! The one who just had an incredible year, again!

Seriously, a writer for the Eagle Tribune came to this conclusion (or, more likely, took this angle of trolling both Cardinals and Patriots fans). I wanted to look away, but the awfulness is just too seductive.

Back in 2009, New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick flirted with the adage that "nobody is untradeable," when he dealt an in-his-prime, potential Hall-of-Famer Richard Seymour to Oakland for a first-round pick.

Nice premise! If Bill Belichick will trade an elite defensive lineman, why won't he trade the guy who might be the best quarterback of all time?

Championship-starved — trust me, Belichick needs another Lombardi Trophy like I need air to breathe — since 2004, despite four trips to the conference title game and a pair of Super Bowl appearances, the Patriots have to contemplate this conundrum.

My opinion? Yes. He's still elite, top three or four. But he's not the best of the best any more. We've seen too much in big games the last handful of years.

My opinion? No. While I believe they can compete at the highest level, particularly in the weak AFC, there are too many key holes to fill (more on that later).

So, without any further beating around the bush, it's time for Patriots football CEO and head coach to consider what several million people probable deem unthinkable: Should the Patriots trade Brady?

I probably probable think more than several million people deem this unthinkable, because no intelligent person has asked this question. The first question, that is. The "Are you an idiot, Longo?" question has certainly been asked re: this article, as Longo knows. Self-aware trolls are the most dangerous.

In this instance, after another January disappointment against a driven, rugged, physical but soon-to-be dismantled Ravens team, sending Brady away this off-season would be the best for all parties.

Oh, I see what you did there! The Pats were beaten by the Ravens, and the Ravens will be dismantled by the 49ers! This was troll inception, hiding the "49ers Will Win Easily, You Idiots" article within the "Tom Brady Lost A Super Bowl Last Year And An AFC Championship Game This Year ZOMG Trade Him" article. Clever. Self-aware. Is First Take hiring?

Brady, even at age 35, should command a deal of at the least Ricky Williams proportions (somebody's entire draft) or maybe even to the extremes that the Vikings paid Dallas for Herschel Walker (two 1sts, two 2nds, two 3rds).

He's right! An otherworldly quarterback would probably land you an entire draft. Perhaps more. If the Pats are lucky, they might find a Hall-of-Fame quarterback with one of those picks! It's tough, but Belichick has done it before. Did you know, he drafted Tom Brady in the sixth round?

First and foremost, the Cardinals can't hurt you. In the NFC West, Brady is as far away as possible. Unless he plays another five years — highly unlikely — the only place you'll encounter Brady again on the field of battle is at a Super Bowl.

Trade Tom Brady to the Cardinals, so that the Cardinals can get to the Super Bowl. You see, by trading Tom Brady, the Patriots will ruin their chances at getting to a Super Bowl, so they'll never have to play against Tom Brady!

The Cardinals have the ammunition to attract the Patriots to the negotiating table. Remember, they pick at No. 7, an attractive spot for this draft, which has already been fortified by over 70 underclassmen.

You know the old NFL adage: if you have an elite quarterback, trade him for picks in a year where there's an underwhelming crop of quarterbacks.

Arizona also has incredible need. Most draftniks currently have the Cards dabbling with the likes of USC QB Matt Barkley or West Virginia's Geno Smith in the first round.

Why take a shot and fail again, a la Matt Leinart? This franchise can have its own new face in a matter days, one that is proven and currently stands at the forefront of the game.

In the alternate universe where this trade actually happens, Longo will be able to write the same exact column next year, in reverse. The Cardinals didn't win the Super Bowl with Tom Brady. He's only the third-best quarterback in the league. Trade him to the Patriots; they need a quarterback and could sure use a guy like Tom Brady!

If you're new coach Bruce Arians and you've got a choice, do you open your first real NFL head coaching job with Hall of Famer Tom Brady or the three-headed menace known as Hoyer/Skelton/Kolb?

This would not be one-sided. The Cardinals would get one of the game's best quarterbacks to go with one of the best wide receivers in the game (Larry Fitzgerald) and become an immediate contender.

Tom Brady can turn the Cardinals into an immediate contender, but he will not help the Patriots win a Super Bowl. Logic!

The Patriots are 7-7 over their last 14 playoff games with a defense that has "improved" from 32nd to 31st to 27th overall in the last three seasons.

The move fits, if not for the entire franchise, but for Belichick, who at times appears uneasy with this pass-happy product we have come to know, adore and be summarily disappointed by in the playoffs.

Replacing Brady would be a chore. But it can happen. Better yet, you don't have to replace him, just find a quarterback 75 percent as good as Brady, who can run an offense.

Remember that guy Matt Cassel? He led you to an 11-5 mark in 2008 when Brady was on the shelf. Chances are he could be had for a song in Kansas City, where he probably doesn't fit into new coach Andy Reid's system.

Shortly after the Super Bowl, Alex Smith will be seeking a new home. He was a couple botched punt returns away from leading the Niners to Super Bowl XLVI.

Oh, now it makes sense. Trade Tom Brady, acquire Matt Cassell. It's all about buying low and selling high, you guys. You think there's any way the 49ers would part with David Akers for Brady?

Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Juventus & Manchester United - Goal.com

Barring a huge surprise, the continent's four biggest leagues will be won by the usual suspects in 2012-13, as the gulf grows between the recognised elite and their challengers

The ancien regime reigns supreme. Barring unforeseen upsets of dramatic proportions, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Juventus and Manchester United with all be crowned champions of their respective leagues this term and the days when a team from outside the established elite could break through and secure a title triumph in one of the continent's choice competitions appear to be firmly in the past. In fact, they may never return.

Barcelona lead La Liga by 13 points from fierce rivals Real Madrid, first and third in Uefa's co-efficient rankings and the two wealthiest teams in the whole of Europe. In Deloitte's latest annual rich list, published in January, Madrid came out top with over €500 million earned in 2011-12, with Barca in second with just under half a billion brought in over that period. No other Spanish side was in the top 20 and the big two's closest challengers at home, Valencia and Atletico Madrid, accrued little more than €100m in the same season. Malaga, meanwhile, a team hoping to upset the top two in Spain with an ambitious plan in place, are now set to be hit with a European ban which will likely lead to the disintegration of their playing squad - and the subsequent demise of their promising project.

In Germany, Bayern top the Bundesliga by an unprecedented margin of 20 points from Borussia Dortmund, and will be crowned champions this weekend if they beat Hamburg at home and BVB fail to win at VfB Stuttgart. The Munich side seem set for a period of domestic dominance as well, with Pep Guardiola arriving as coach this summer and a healthy European co-efficient ranking which sees them separate Barca and Madrid at the top of Uefa's seedings. Club coffers are also in great shape, with the Bavarians bringing in €368.4 million in 2011-12, according to Deloitte, making them the fourth-richest club in the continent.

In Italy, meanwhile, Juventus have officially recovered from demotion to Serie B in 2006 and the long road back to the top. That the Turin-based club would return to Europe's elite, however, was never in doubt. Juve have more fans than any other club in Italy, fulsome financial backing, a brand-new stadium and potential to become even stronger in the next few seasons. Still recovering in terms of their Uefa co-efficient after several seasons spent lower down in Serie A prior to last term's Scudetto, Juve are only 10th in Deloitte's rich list. But back among the cream of the crop in Europe, earnings will improve, as will the club's co-efficient in the coming campaigns, particularly as they are about to clinch a second straight title at home (they are currently nine points ahead of second-placed Napoli) and are in the last eight of the Champions League for the first time since their 2006 demotion for their role in the Calciopoli scandal.

And it's not just Europe's top leagues, either. In France, nouveau-riche Paris Saint-Germain lead Ligue 1 and are arguably the country's biggest club, thanks to the significant outlay from Qatar Sports Investments. In Scotland, meanwhile, Celtic have taken full advantage of Rangers' demotion to the fourth tier for financial meltdown by storming to a 15-point lead over Motherwell in the SPL, stripped of their only real challengers for the trophy. In Portugal, traditional giants Benfica and Porto are doing battle for the SuperLiga, while Olympiakos lead the Greek championship by 16 points, Anderlecht are on top in Belgium and Galatasaray look likely to edge out Fenerbahce and Besiktas in Turkey. Elsewhere, Ajax, PSV Eindhoven and Feyenoord fight it out for the Dutch Eredivisie. The biggest clubs are in control across the board - all across the continent.

Uefa's Financial Fair Play regulations are supposed to create more of a level playing field, with sides forced to spend within their means instead of racking up huge debts in order to fund short-term gain. Those rules, however, hand a considerable advantage to Europe's richest clubs, who will be able to continue spending their impressive income while others will not. Teams like Barcelona, Madrid and Manchester United will be required to manage their finances more responsibly than in recent years, yet their remarkable revenue from gate receipts, shirt sales and sponsorship, image rights, lucrative pre-season tours and television deals will allow the elite to keep buying big. Under the FFP laws, the rich will get richer - and that seems to be how Uefa want it.

Co-efficient rules also aid the continent's top teams. The Champions League has been designed to allow access to most of Europe's biggest clubs, ensuring maximum exposure and mega money for those lucky few. Failure to qualify for the competition these days is considered a disaster for many sides across the continent. Valencia, for example, will be forced to sell several of their finest footballers should they miss out on next season's competition. Others just below the elite, such as Roma, Tottenham and Atletico Madrid, suffer a little more each season without coveted Champions League money, and must either be extremely well run (like Spurs) or part with their best players (as Atletico have done in recent years and will again when Radamel Falcao likely leaves in the summer to clear debts).

These days, though, most teams consider the Europa League to be a second-rate consolation competition or an unwanted distraction, with many clubs not even fielding strong sides because the financial rewards do not make it worth their while, when they are better off focusing their energies on Champions League qualification instead.

So it may be some time before we see another Nottingham Forest, a Hellas Verona or a Deportivo La Coruna - teams that worked their way up to the top on a relative shoestring and rocked Europe's elite. Today, Uefa's priority appears to be merely financial, and some of the romance, mystique and magic is lost as the ancien regime's grip on the game looks set to grow even stronger in the coming years.Follow Ben Hayward on

Kompany: Manchester City must learn from this season - Yahoo! Sports

In marked contrast to the closely-run subject race that was closed by Sergio Aguero on the last day of last year, Sir Alex Ferguson's side contains a commanding 15-point lead over City with just seven games of the plan left to perform. With Kompany paid off to just 20 league hearings after time spent sidelined through harm, he's admitted that the group only hasn't been sufficient this year under manager Roberto Mancini's direction. "You always want to go for the games and you always want to go for the top," Kompany told Sky Sports. "I have noticed it in as every other person the same way. Our team has been wanted by me to accomplish well. "We still have a good work in the FA Cup, but fundamentally in football you have to have successful and a loss, therefore I think we shall study on what occurred there and we'll grow stronger again." The Manchester derby happens at Old Trafford right after the conclusion of the international break and Kompany has targeted a return to first-team activity along with his team, giving he comes through Belgium's installation record untouched. "I feel great, I feel really good," he said. "I have place in some work over the ten last weeks and I am just happy to be back with the staff. Yes it is irritating but it is something you've to manage as a professional soccer player. "I have already been by way of a lot worse than this, therefore for me it was only a case of working very difficult and ensuring that I was able to be there for the staff again. My only desire was to create myself available again for the manager of the national group, for the manager of Manchester City, and I've worked really hard." Follow GOAL.COM on Twitter

Jovetic in, Podolski out? - Arsenal World

There a rumblings about Lukas Podolski wanting out - frankly I'm not surprised. Despite having a good start and coming out of the blocks running, the German has been marginalised by being played out of position. He's a goalscorer - and a bloody good one at that - but he doesn't seem to be getting the opportunities.

"I've heard about Arsenal's interest," Jovetic was quoted as saying by The Sun. "It's a big pleasure for me to be on the radar of such a big club. I am happy about that.

It's not easy to replace van Persie, who scored a lot of goals. Arsenal have plenty of players who don't score like van Persie, but are also very good.

"They are still very strong. I often watch Premier League games on TV. It's one of the best leagues in the world and looks tempting for me. Maybe one day I will play there but I have a contract with Fiorentina and battling for a Champions League place in Serie A is the only thing I'm thinking about now."

No doubt by the time that any deals need to be done we'll be out-thought and out fought by other more decisive clubs.

Do I sound negative? - that's because at the moment I am, and I don't see any improvement at the club without major changes at board / management level.

Stoke 0-0 West Brom: Potters poor form continues after disappointing home draw - Goal.com America

A 0-0 stalemate at the Britannia helped Stoke to climb up the table as it kept its first home clean sheet since November, although there is still pressure mounting on manager Tony Pulis.

The home side has managed only one win in 2013, but displayed a strong defensive performance against West Brom, which had won three of its last four games to help push for a top eight finish before coming into the fixture.

A point for Stoke however has seen it climb up the table on goal difference, but the Potters are locked with four other teams on 33 points. West Brom stays eighth in the league, only two points behind seventh-placed Liverpool.

West Brom started the livelier side as it applied the pressure on the Potters in the opening minutes of the tie, with Chris Brunt forcing Asmir Begovic into an early save after James Morrison put in a through ball for the midfielder.

Despite a rocky start, Jon Walters went on to have the best chance of the first half, with his shot deflecting off Olsson before creeping inches wide of Ben Foster's goal.

The home side made the first substitution of the game, bringing on Dean Whitehead for Greg Whelan at halftime, but it was West Brom who started the second half brightly. Thomas' cross was directed to Lukaku who headed the ball towards the Stoke goal, but Begovic caught with ease.

Stoke also came close in the early phase of the second half, but Crouch and Etherington saw their chances go to waste after some resilient keeping from Foster.

Clarke's side looked dominant however, with West Brom repeatedly breaking on the right side of the pitch, with Morrison's crosses providing a challenge for Stoke to deal with, although Lukaku failed to make use of his opportunities.

Stoke came agonizingly close to the opening goal with 10 minutes to go, as Wilson's header travelled inches wide of the goal following Whitehead's corner.

Valencia covers Manchester United exit number in front of A60m summer...

Mar 25, 2013 7:45:00 AM The winger is joined by the likes of Nani, Anderson and Chicharito on the listing of participants who Sir Alex Ferguson can tune in to offers for this summer It's difficult to trust that Manchester United need actually experience the negative effects of these choices. The membership have a very transport policy which appears mainly sleek, a manager whose position may rightly never come under threat and a lead at the top of the Premier League which is testament for their quality on and off the message. But, when the summer move screen happens, the fact of the Red Devilsa position will be apparent. Difficult choices should be made as a direct result of the work performed in the 12 months preceding that time - and the danger of making the incorrect ones is necessary. Their place will be all found by antonio Valencia, Nani, Anderson, Chicharito and Anders Lindegaard in the squad under threat, with a rare upgrade at Old Trafford set to click into gear. Sir Alex Fergusonas want to land Robin van Persie aat all costsa ahead of Manchester City is defined in the future home for a club loaded with an unbelievable level of debt will undoubtedly be underlined to roost; the unsustainable nature of that structure. The Dutchmanas a292,000-per-week wages and the a20 million acquisition of Wilfried Zaha - a shift brought forward to January because of this of interest from other clubs - have effectively damaged the summertime budget. For that reason, United are wanting to build a82m in inward transfer costs, with Sir Alex willing to create in more consistent, cost-effective answers to his impending group clearout. Anderson is actively seeking a move away having did not establish himself at Old Trafford, as specifically revealed by Goal.com on Saturday, and a bunch of South American clubs are set to battle for his signature. Lindegaard, meanwhile, can be likely to smooth the path towards his exit, having lately voiced concern over falling behind David delaware Gea in the pecking order. Chicharito is considered to be Atletico Madridas number one target following the expected departure of Falcao and, while Valencia may possibly prove more challenging to shift, the Ecuadorian is likely to be forced toward the exit door having failed to find his best form following an extended injury lay-off. As a well-placed source told Goal.com, these departures were efficiently determined by the all-or-nothing pursuit of Van Persie prior to this season: aSir Alex and the team caused it to be abundantly clear they would get that extra yard for Robin. United realized the numbers involved but saw it as a real indication of intention moving forward. aA couple of other targets had to slip consequently, undoubtedly Lucas Moura, when Paris Saint-Germain made their curiosity known in the boy. "Those numbers were just mad. Wilfried Zaha is just a sound investment because of the comparatively low money involved. Sir Alex knows he'll need to be even cuter come early july as a result of Robin now being on our pay bill." The decision to discard the signing of another big-name for big money betrays Sir Alex's choice for keeping the unique team size which includes served United sail to the concept this period. This, of course, implies that, however for Mario Gotze, his current come-get-me request to Real and United Madrid may fall on deaf ears, in England at the very least. Regardless, though the summer arrivals at Old Trafford may possibly not be as fascinating in individual terms, the pursuit of increased consistency over the group should similarly warn Unitedas opponents. This is a membership who possess a raft of marquee participants currently, and their supporting cast might be planning to get yourself a bit more powerful. Follow Mark Lynch on

Hamlin has compression fracture in lower back

Denny Hamlin suffered a fracture in his lower back throughout Sunday's last-lap accident at Fontana, Calif., his racing team said Monday. Joe Gibbs Racing unveiled the damage and said Hamlin was anticipated to be released soon from the Southern California hospital to come back home. He has what's called an L1 compression fracture; primarily, the initial vertebra in the back element of his spine collapsed. There was no word on how long his recovery would take. JGR said he'll be considered by Dr. Jerry Petty of Carolina Neurosurgery and Spine Associates later this week. Hamlin was airlifted from the track after having a accident with Joey Logano on the penultimate turn sent him almost head-on into the inside wall. Logano was able to finish next despite wrecking to the external wall after striking Hamlin, who spun Logano a week ago at Bristol and started a bitter post-race confrontation. "He probably shouldn't have done what he did last week, so that is what he gets," Logano said Sunday following the race won by Kyle Busch. Tony Stewart found myself in a shoving match with Logano, who strongly blocked Stewart out of a late restart. Hamlin's team needs Logano to be fined. Before an ambulance arrived Hamlin got herself out of the car, but declined to the bottom beside it. He was eventually airlifted out because of traffic across the track. His lover, Jordan Fish, tweeted afterward that Hamlin was "alert d alert, principal interest is his back." The damage is really a bit more common in open-wheel race, which includes had three situations of individuals breaking their backs since 2009. Perseverence broke several vertebrae in his back in a 2009 accident all through practice at Sonoma and missed that event and the remaining three events of the season. He couldn't teach for two months and used a straight back support for almost four months. As he healed during the offseason he also suffered a fracture of his last thoracic vertebrae in the 2011 season ending at Vegas but missed no racing. Justin Wilson fractured his sixth thoracic vertebra in 2011 and missed the last six races of the season. Wilson said he was in a back support for 10 months. In NASCAR, Sterling Marlin missed the final seven events of the 2002 season with a broken vertebra in his throat.

Touch upon TaylorMade R1 Driver Assessment by Sportyards

Here's a remarkable statistic for you to digest. During a three month stretch in 2012, 78% of all metal woods sold were white.

We started getting hints about the next generation driver from TaylorMade's flagship R series through TV ads that are now becoming quite familiar. The long hitting, driver loving TaylorMade Tour staff gathered around a box, whistled, muttered an expletive or two and sent the internet into frenzied discussion.  Since then we've seen Justin Rose in war paint and two PGA Tour victories in two weeks. Is it all a bit much? Maybe, but who am I to argue with the company that can pull off that little number I shared above.

The name says it all. The R1 comes in a single loft and 12 different loft combinations all at once.  Consumers won't have to decide among a number of options to buy, but instead will be able to 'tune' one driver to the loft, face angle, and shot shape they desire.

This is an incredibly simple, yet remarkably complicated idea all at the same time. Simple because having one head to choose from makes for an easy shopping experience, but complicated because there is a certain amount of knowledge and equipment required to get an ideal set of launch conditions. If drivers could talk, the R1 would say, "Go see a fitter."

In the absence of a fitting, TaylorMade does provide resources that should help consumers learn to get the most out of the R1. First, there is an app called R1 Virtual for both Android and iPhone devices that can be downloaded for free. There are also videos out there on youtube.com that offer good instructions, along with some neat graphics. Lastly, there's a handy webpage on TaylorMade's website that I found the most helpful. I'm going to give a little rundown of three basic elements of the tuning experience here as well.

The first step in R1 tuning is centered on loft and the adjustments are made via the adapter at the end of the shaft, which has a few new settings when compared to previous R series drivers. The result is a 4° range of lofts to choose from – seven settings from 8° to 12°, in addition to five settings with an upright lie angle.

"Offering a wide range of loft settings is imperative, because our research indicates that 80 percent of golfers are playing the wrong loft, which costs them distance," said Dr. Benoit Vincent, chief technical officer. "The R1 offers 12 positions to help golfers find the loft that delivers the launch conditions that deliver maximum distance."

1) Golfers typically choose the wrong loft when they buy off the rack, usually opting for too little loft because of a long-held belief that a lower-lofted driver will promote long distance. In fact, a low-lofted driver typically costs the average player carry and distance by promoting a too-low launch angle.

2)  Changes to driver design during in recent years to promote lower spin (such as moving the CG location lower and forward) has made it possible for many players to switch to a higher loft that promotes more carry and distance by achieving a better combination of high launch/low spin launch conditions.

With adjustable drivers like the R1, loft changes alter face angle. The R11 was the first TaylorMade driver to offer a sole plate, which is designed to give the consumer the ability to get the face angle back to the position of his or her preference. For the sole plate to work, the driver must be grounded at address.

The R1's sole plate is beefed up compared to previous models, with 7 positions ranging from 3° open to 3° closed. It seems simple enough, though there is a somewhat confusing element to it. The sole plate is used to offset loft changes, so a driver set at 12° loft will need to have the sole plate set to 3° open to achieve the appearance of a neutral face angle. If that sounds confusing, it's because it sort of is. I'd love to see this simplified a bit in the future. Again, I'll mention the resource available on TaylorMade's website, so you can see exactly what loft and sole plate combination is needed to get the face angle where you want it.

While the popular assumption is that face angle changes will alter side to side ball flight, TaylorMade relies on two interchangeable weights for this type of manipulation. This is the easiest of the three adjustments to understand. The heavier weight determines the shot shape, so putting it in the heel will promote a draw and vise-versa.

The R1 is sporting a racy new paint job on top of its white crown. As I briefly mentioned above, it's been likened to war paint in TV advertising. One incredibly valuable result of the new graphics is that it's so easy to tell which Tour players are using the R1. Even at a distance, the burnt orange, black, and gray makes it clear that this isn't an R11. For that reason alone, the war paint is genius. TaylorMade found something that trumps white when it comes to TV visibility.

Of course, TaylorMade does contend that there is some technological value to the new paint job, primarily in the form of aiding alignment. On a personal level, I am quite indifferent to the paint. While it's not what I'd choose if I was designing my own driver, it's certainly not a distraction or detraction. However, I also didn't find much value in it when it came to aiding alignment. I tend to zone out enough that I don't pay attention to the top of the driver head at address. In the end, I see it mostly as a way to separate the R1 from the R11, and that's perfectly understandable from my perspective.

I still remember the SuperTri as the best sounding driver ever created. Maybe that's because it was my first 'real' driver, but something about it was just right to my ears. Admittedly, I haven't been a fan of the sound that subsequent TaylorMade drivers have produced. That is, until the R1 came along.

While it doesn't replicate, or even rival, the sweet sounding SuperTri, the sound from the R1 is something I learned to really enjoy. While it is plenty loud, it's got a somewhat muted, high pitched note to it. Still, it's not reminiscent of an aluminum bat and probably isn't something that will raise eyebrows on the driving range.

Adjustable driver heads that rotate around the shaft do have detractions, and one of those is that graphics and logos on the shaft and grip can end up in odd spots. To fix this, TaylorMade did two things. First, they left the Aldila RIP Phenom shaft mostly void of graphics and gave it a paintjob that looks almost identical in every conceivable loft setting. In addition, the TM 360 grip (reminiscent of a Tour Velvet) is the same way. This is good thinking on TaylorMade's part and should please those of you that are picky about that sort of thing.

I also thought I'd touch a bit on the sole of the R1. In reality, it's probably the most unattractive part of the golf club. Many comments have been made comparing the sole plate to a compass, an astute observation in my opinion. Regardless of your personal taste, it is a very busy sole. In addition, there are a number of nooks, crevices and depressions on it that seem to trap dirt quite frequently. If I were offering suggestions for the future, it would be to find a way to make the sole a little cleaner. I know the sole plate makes that difficult, but I'd rather not have to grab a Q-Tip to clean my driver.

R1's ultra-light Aldila RIP Phenom 55 is faster clubhead speed, yet is strategically weighted to deliver the feel of a heavier, 65-gram shaft. The RIP Phenom 55 also features Aldila's Hyberbolic Flex Technology™ that incorporates a stiff tip section to promote optimal launch and spin control, a very firm butt section for incredibly stable feel, and a softer center section that promotes an added "kick" through impact for maximum ball speed.

Shafts are an incredibly personal thing, so I'm hesitant to express much in the way of an opinion, but I will give you a couple perspectives for comparison.

My typical driver swing speed is in the 100mph range, and at times slightly higher. My feeling was that the RIP Phenom played true to flex, offered a mid-launch, and felt sufficiently stable in my hands. Conversely, I asked a friend, who is a more accomplished golfer with a higher swing speed, to take some swings with the R1 and his belief was that the shaft felt quite soft, offered a very high launch, and didn't give him the stability he looks for.

In a nutshell, get fit and play the right shaft for your game. For typical amateur swings, I think the RIP Phenom is more than adequate, but we all have different needs and preferences.

One thing I learned about the R1 during testing was that it truly is many drivers in one. The first swings I took with it were with the loft in the factory setting of 10°. After some swings in that configuration, I raised the loft to 12°. Let me preface this by saying that I tend to hit the ball lower than many people to start with. Regardless, here are some numbers showing the difference I saw on that day after a quick adjustment.

Please keep in mind that this is one person's numbers on one day, but I do think it gives a general idea of what can be accomplished by a simple loft adjustment. As I became more familiar with the R1, my launch angles at the 12° setting were typically in the 12° to 15° range with a spin rate that I'd characterize on the lower side.

I tend to believe that forgiveness is often rated more on a subjective level than an objective one, so I tried to take as much of the guesswork out of this as possible.

I took impact tape and looked at the results on a Vector launch monitor. The graphic and corresponding tables below show what I saw from contact on various spots on the face.

While this test doesn't have the same element of perfection that a robotic test can offer, it does show some results from a typical golfer in the 12 handicap range. A quick analysis shows me that missing slightly higher on the face offered somewhat better results than those lower on the face. My personal observation was that the R1 proved to be an adequately forgiving driver.

I'm not a huge proponent of claiming one driver is longer than another, even if I hit it farther in testing. Differences in distance between modern drivers are often a matter of fitting rather than one being 'longer' than the other, with some exceptions .

With that statement made, I'll say that the R1 does offer the opportunity to significantly increase one's driver carry distance. I say that primarily based on the TaylorMade's premise that 80% of golfers are playing the wrong loft. Being able to fine tune a single driver to optimal launch conditions could allow for some serious gains, as evidenced by the tables I showed above. Of course, that statement relies on a few things. The golfer either needs access to a knowledgeable fitter or the ability to tune the R1 themselves, ideally with the aid of a launch monitor. Finding the right shaft will be necessary as well. Still, this is quite the improvement from a couple years ago when we were forced to choose a loft and stick with it.

The only real downside to this is that the adjustments can be confusing, especially for the undereducated golfer. The most confusing thing to me was that the sole plate needs to offset loft adjustments if one wishes to keep a neutral face. I fear the use of the word Neutral on the sole plate will cause confusion.

On a personal level, I was quite impressed with the R1. It gave me the ability to find a decent set of launch conditions, which I can't always do with a driver that I'm asked to review. In addition, I felt like it was easy for me to control. Finally, it sounded better than the last couple TaylorMade drivers that have been put to market. It's a total-package driver in my books, assuming the looks fit your eye.

I'll reiterate my belief that the easiest way to get the most out of this driver is a fitting, or at least a good working knowledge of launch conditions and the way the various adjustments affect them. Yes, trial and error on the driving range may work for some, but my experience has been that what we think is right isn't always right.

For more information on the R1, you can head to www.taylormadegolf.com. In addition, a group of THP forum members has been reviewing this driver and you can read their experiences here.

Brighton manager Gus Poyet declines Reading offer

After a brief yet seemingly half-hearted flirtation, Brighton & Hove Albion manager Gus Poyet has declined the advances of Premier League strugglers Reading to stay with the South Coast club.

Poyet, 45, has made an excellent start to his managerial career with Brighton, and his current side lie outside the Championship play-offs on goal difference.

A cosmopolitan squad boasts stellar names such as former Manchester United goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak, England internationals Matthew Upson and Wayne Bridge and former Valencia winger Vicente.

However, there are also plenty of promising British players at the new Amex Stadium. 23-year-old midfielder Liam Bridcutt has been called up to the Scotland squad for the first time, while strikers Craig Mackail-Smith and Will Hoskins are experienced in the lower leagues and would fancy the chance to impress at Premier League level.

Everything hints at Brighton continuing to grow as a club, while the sacking of Brian McDermott suggests confused decision-making at Reading.

The Berkshire club surprisingly won the English Championship last year under McDermott, but have failed to push on since, losing four successive games including a crucial 2-1 defeat to relegation rivals Aston Villa at the Madejski Stadium – which proved the final straw for owner Anton Zingarevich.

Zingarevich has been widely criticised for dispensing with the popular 50-year-old so close to the end of the season, leaving his replacement little time to transform the side.

And given that even winger Jimmy Kebe admitted that the squad was not of Premier League quality in a fiery interview over the Christmas period, it is difficult to see what Poyet would gain from moving to a stagnant side likely to be relegated.

Conversely, Brighton are in a rich vein of form just when they need to be flourishing. A 3-0 victory over local rivals and promotion candidates Crystal Palace at a delirious Amex Stadium was hugely impressive, and their attractive brand of football suggests that they will continue to progress.

Indeed, with Leicester City and Watford faltering recently, Poyet will harbour increasingly realistic hopes of a play-off position, followed by promotion – which would probably involve trading divisions with Reading.

And given the Uruguyan's excellence, it is possible that elite Premier League sides will make their move. Poyet remains admired at Stamford Bridge, where he enjoyed a distinguished playing career, and could be in the frame at Everton if David Moyes decides to leave Goodison Park.

This is, of course, hypothetical and unlikely to happen in the near future. However, it was shrewd of Poyet to eschew the possibility of a pay rise and what arguably amounts to a sideways move.

Zingarevich is now likely to turn to former Southampton manager Nigel Adkins, a coach of pedigree who would help to stabilise the situation at the Madejski Stadium. Meanwhile, for Poyet, the sky appears to be the limit.

Djokovic upset by Tommy Haas at Key Biscayne

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. (AP) — For the final few games, the fellow frustrating Novak Djokovic from across the net wore a lavender shirt, a red sweatband, black shoes with lime trim and a blue cap.

Eight days shy of his 35th birthday, tour veteran Haas defeated three-time champion Novak Djokovic in the fourth round of the Sony Open, 6-2, 6-4. The upset Tuesday night snapped Djokovic's 14-match winning streak at Key Biscayne, where he won the tournament the past two years.

"This is crazy," Haas said. "Playing against someone like Novak and coming out on top at this time of my career, it's unbelievable."

As for Haas' outfit: "Yeah, I'm pretty pathetic I think when it comes to color matching," he said. "Sometimes I look at myself in the mirror before I go out and I'm like, 'Geez, what was I thinking?' I guess if I maybe had a clothing contract it would be different."

The top-ranked Djokovic has lost two of his past four matches after winning 22 in a row, including the Australian Open for his sixth Grand Slam title.

"All the credit to Tommy," Djokovic said. "He played a great match and he was the better player, no question about it."

The oldest player in the top 50, Haas is making his 13th appearance at Key Biscayne and advanced the tournament's quarterfinals for the first time. His opponent Wednesday will be No. 11 Gilles Simon, who rallied past No. 7 Janko Tipsarevic, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2.

Sam Querrey lasted only 50 minutes in the fourth round and lost to Tomas Berdych, 6-1, 6-1. Querrey was playing his first tournament as the No. 1 American on the ATP Tour, and his elimination means that for the first time, the 28-year-old tournament will have no U.S. men in the quarterfinals.

"I guess you could say it's been somewhat of the norm the last couple of years," Querrey said. "It's not like we had guys in the quarters week in, week out."

American results on the women's side have been better lately, thanks mostly to No. 1-ranked Serena Williams. The five-time Key Biscayne champion advanced to Thursday's semifinals and tied the women's record for career victories in the tournament by beating No. 5-seeded Li Na 6-3, 7-6 (5).

Williams' opponent in the semifinals Thursday will be defending champion Agnieszka Radwanska, who hit a desperation shot behind her back for a winner en route to a win over No. 30 Kirsten Flipkens, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.

With temperatures in the 50s for the final match of the night, Djokovic appeared out of sorts from the start. During his second service game he became annoyed at fans shouting as he was about to serve.

"It's definitely the worst match I have played in a long time," Djokovic said. "I just didn't feel good on the court. Conditions were really much, much different from what I have played in previous matches. Balls didn't bounce at all. He has a quite flat shots. He used the variety really well. It was very cold, and I just didn't find a better solution to come back."

Djokovic hit consecutive forehand errors to lose serve and fall behind 3-2, the start of a stretch where Haas won six consecutive games. The German hit three spectacular winners to break again for a 5-2 lead, and Djokovic double-faulted to lose serve once more in the opening game of the second set.

Djokovic broke for the only time to reach 3-all, but lost his serve again. Haas closed out the victory with a forehand winner, then shared a warm exchange at the net with a gracious Djokovic, who gave the crowd a wave as he left the court.

Haas didn't look his age from the start, and not just because he played with his cap on backward. He played patiently from the baseline, mixing the pace of his shots to win a succession of long rallies, and he repeatedly whacked winners when Djokovic tried to force the issue by coming forward.

"I'm just really happy and proud that tonight, against such a great player who has been dominating the sport the past couple of years, I really took advantage of the opportunities I got," Haas said. "I think I played extremely well."

While Williams continues to dominate the WTA Tour, no American man has reached the past five Grand Slam quarterfinals. The outlook wasn't helped by the retirement of Andy Roddick, whose 2003 U.S. Open championship is the most recent major title by a U.S. male.

Querrey was playing his first tournament as the top American, and he managed his best showing in eight appearances at Key Biscayne, aided by a walkover in the third round.

His serve and forehand let him down against Berdych, however. The 6-foot-6 Querrey came into tournament second on the tour in aces this year, but he had only four against Berdych, and made only 39 percent of his first serves.

"Just one of those awful days," Querrey said. "The more you miss, the harder it gets to get the ball in. It just kept getting worse."

No. 2 Andy Murray, the champion in 2009 and runner-up last year, beat No. 16 Andreas Seppi 6-2, 6-4. His opponent Wednesday will be No. 9 Marin Cilic, who defeated No. 6 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-5, 7-6 (4).

No. 8 Richard Gasquet hit 17 aces, including three in the final tiebreaker, defeated No. 10 Nicolas Almagro 6-7 (3), 7-5, 7-6 (3). Gasquet will next face No. 4 Berdych.

No. 3 David Ferrer beat No. 13 Kei Nishikori 6-4, 6-2. Ferrer's opponent Wednesday will be unseeded Jurgen Melzer, who rallied past Albert Ramos, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.

FGCU's Cinderella Run Spawns 'Dunk City' Anthem

Call it what you will, but Florida Gulf Coast University has it by the pound. And now it has an anthem to go along with it.

The Azuls dunked their way into the national conscience while handling No. 2 seed Georgetown on Friday night. The win torched brackets everywhere, and basketball fans across the nation all wondered, "Where in the Sam HIll are these guys from?"

FGCU's jaw-dropping run through Georgetown and San Diego State during this weekend's tournament play has caused a tidal wave of excitement in the team, and its high-flying dunks have inspired the program's first anthem.

A rapper who calls himself "Black Magic" has taken up the task, penning "Dunk City," a tribute to the team's upset-minded intentions and, more importantly, its habit of slamma-jamming the rock and taking opponents on frequent trips to Lob Town, USA.

Five days ago, one would bet Black Magic and Bambi had no intentions of penning a song about a No. 15 seed. But after the domination the team displayed this weekend, these FGCU fans have all the right in the world to talk about us "throwin' alleys" and how "Coach Enfield is married to a model, team's playin' really hard."

Goofy, cheesy and to the point, "Dunk City" is a perfect anthem for the Azuls' tournament run. And while he's no Black Thought, Black Magic is telling the truth when he says, "You top seeds should all be in fear."

Stunning Research from the Sacramento Kings' Time To Date

The more we enter activities, the greater the stress we put on mathematical analysis. This is a development that started in Major League Baseball, however it can be now gaining momentum in one other major activities. The NBA is not any different. With the category replacing its statistical database on NBA.com and the increase in popularity of websites like Basketball-Reference.com and hoopshype.com, amongst others, we have more and more data at our fingertips than in the past. We are able to study trends, such as a team's performance in a certain building, at a certain stage in a game or on a certain side of the ball. Often the figures examine what we're seeing with our eyes; other instances, they illuminate things we could have overlooked. After seeing the Sacramento Kings for almost a full period, we have a mountain of evidence to tell to us we need to find out concerning the team. That, here are the most startling statistics from the growing season so far. Facilitates Are Up Us TODAY Sports From Sacramento Leaders PR statistician Darryl Arata: As Arata points out with this specific stat, their ball movement has been really improved by the Kings on offense. Too often times early in the season, the group would go through continuous droughts on crime, and because it'd enjoy too much one-on-one basketball it was often. That's no further the case. The Kings are carrying out a far better job of discussing the ball. The encouraging thing is that it's not just the point guards who're getting assists. Isaiah Thomas (3.8), Tyreke Evans (3.5), John Salmons (3.1), DeMarcus Cousins (2.9) and Toney Douglas (2.8) are all averaging significantly more than 2.5 assists per game. Unsurprisingly, it is causing a a lot more explosive offense than the one we observed earlier in the season... Total Scoring Is Up Chuck Cook-USA TODAY Sports More from Arata: And: The Kings are beginning to fix nearly all of their problems on the offensive end, as you can observe. Their scoring has been far better recently. It's had an overall impact on the growing season stats. As an example, the Kings are now as much as 12th in altered unpleasant rating. The group can also be 10th in points per game at 99.7. Yet it is averaging 110.0 items since the All-Star break, so the Kings are clearly increasing in the ratings. But while the offense may be steadily improving, the same can not necessarily be said for the defense... The Protection Wants Some Significant Work Isaiah T. Downing-USA TODAY Spor However, the security has been completely awful. For one, more points are given up by no team an average of than the Kings. With an opponent average of 104.7 points per game, Sacramento is away and far the easiest team to score on. The Charlotte Bobcats rank 29th in this figure, and they provide up typically 103.0 things. Opposition points per game can be misleading. In case a group includes a high pace charge, then its opposition is going to have more assets. More possessions leads to more factors. That's why statistics like defensive score and opposition field-goal percentage may be more effective in testing a team's defense. The Kings also struggle in these parts. Sacramento ranks 29th in defensive status at 111.2. Just the Charlotte Bobcats are worse at 111.7. The Kings may also be 28th in opponent field-goal percentage at 47.0 percent. The Cleveland Cavaliers (47.8 percent) and the Bobcats (47.1) percent are the 2 clubs that are worse. Irrespective of how you cut it, this is one of the worst defensive teams in the NBA. That is not surprising considering how terrible it absolutely was on defense last year, but when you had been searching for development, not much can be found. The Next Fraction Is Damaging the Leaders Ezra Shaw/Getty Photos If you go through the Kings' performance during every individual quarter, you'll begin to see the staff features a negative plus/minus percentage throughout the board. Nevertheless, it is specially poor in the next quarter. Over all, the Kings are minus-149 through the next quarter. That is away and far worse than every other period. The fourth quarter is clearly their best quarter, because the team's only minus-nine. It is also minus-101 in the first and minus-60 through the next quarter. What is a lot more uncomfortable concerning the problems in the 2nd quarter is that you could not indicate a particular thing. It's nothing like the crime actually drops off or the protection becomes lackadaisicala'statistically speaking, both parts are near their worst. The group comes with an bad status of 98.6 in the second quarter. It also features a defensive score of 108.7. With regards to offensive score, that is the worst of any period (not including overtime periods). As for the defensive score, only the fourth quarter is somewhat worse at 110.2. Success in The Home, Struggles on the highway Paul Ehrmann/Getty Photos Despite an overall history of 25-46, the Kings have actually been a pretty good team when playing in the home. They're 19-16 in games played in Sacramento. Where they actually battle is activities on the highway, as the team is a lowly 6-30 far from its home court. It is maybe not unusual to see groups perform far better within their house building. For instance, the Philadelphia 76ers (20-17), Washington Wizards (18-17) and Minnesota Timberwolves (16-16) all post accurate documentation of.500 or better at home. Yet none of the team delivers an overall gain percent higher than.382. Where the Kings are unfortunately distinctive from those teams, and every other group in the NBA, for that matter, is the level of their struggles on the highway. The team's 6-30 path report is worse than any group in the category. The 76ers and Bobcats each only have six road wins, but each of those groups has significantly less than 30 road losses. Part of Sacramento's problems on the street may be caused by uninspired play on offense. While the Kings report an of 104.8 points at home, they only average 94.8 points on the road. The difference between the points allowed at home (104.1) versus the points allowed on the street (105.2) is much smaller, showing the problems are related to breakdowns on the end. The Power of Fan Help Kelley T Cox-USA TODAY Activities That one could be contained in the last fall as a potential reason for the team's success at home. But along with playing within their house building, in addition, it appears there's a primary connection between lover presence and the Kings' performance. Take a look at what Kings VP of ticket sales and service Phil Horn submitted on his Twitter account: Whether it's the crowd noise messing with the movement of opponents or Sacramento eating off the fans' power, obviously the more folks that arrive to games, the greater the Kings perform. Everybody else performs better with just a little support. Obviously the Kings are no different. Follow me on Twitter: @SimRisso. Begin Slideshow Props (0) What's the copy article? Newcastle United are back the black - Journal Live

NEWCASTLE United are in the dark and that's nothing related to a new third strip, European kit or nice instruction equipment create by the club look. No, in what is learning to be a spring-time tradition, United are set to get the wraps off their latest set of financial numbers this week a and The Journal knows the news is good. Not merely have they turned within an operating profit for 2011/12, they have also recorded a general profit which reverses the trend of its nadir was reached by losses which couple of years ago with a A33.5m deficit. Assume their sound financials to be rightly trumpeted by United quite over the span of the week, which seem to help the Mike Ashley approach the club embarked on following their unseemly relegation last year. Down the road at Sunderland, the tendency is equally upwards (to a degree) a' while they have way less to scream about. The team posted A26.9m losses this year, which was A4.3m less than last year but still something that has to be labored on. Issue in the way the group was updated a' players paid down, key men maintained on major contracts a' and it is more clear, although chief executive Margaret Byrne described a financial plana is on its way to sandpaper these failures in the foreseeable future. The truth is, both are able to be high considering what is in the future for Premier League clubs. A windfall of A5bn will undoubtedly be filtered into membership reports over the summer as a result of record-breaking TELEVISION offers, and The Journal could expose today it is already being viewed as a possible agame-changera in the larger baseball world. From next year, perhaps the club in the Premier League is going to be assured A60m for only taking part in English footballas elite league. West Ham owner David Gold reckons that can actually be around A100m annually if certain other ducks fall under the line. Compare and contrast to the income received in 2011, which was only A15m for the team, and you're already getting an idea of golden summer why some are already hailing this because the Premier Leagueas. On the face area of it, the news headlines is positive for the most effective flight. The Journal was told by byrne last month the cash injection will enable purchasing the team and Sunderland to eat within their operating reduction while also keeping your hands on their best people. Expect Derek Llambias to be always a bit more circumspect this week but, make no error, the signings of Moussa Sissoko and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa were fast-tracked with one eye on the summertime bonanza. United, we could expose, are set to start early talks with a harvest of objectives and hope the money injection permits quicker progress to be made by them a year ago than they did. The same will additionally apply to the rest of the category. Seem at Norwich City, like, who've just lavished A8.5m on Sporting Lisbonas Ricky van Wolfswinkel a' a likely Dutch global. West Ham, too, are looking to broker a for Ivory Coast striker Wilfred Bony this week.
