A Newcastle United top signed by Alan Shearer and the late Bobby Robson has been taken from a children's ward in North Tyneside A general view of North Tyneside General Hospital Callous thieves have borrowed a valued closed Newcastle United top from the children's ward in North Tyneside. The prized 2002 top, signed by Alan Shearer, the late Bobby Robson and other members of the staff, was taken from its body from the play room in the Childrenas Ward at North Tyneside General Hospital, between Monday April 15 and Wednesday April 17. Newcastle United includes a long-standing connection with the ward, run by Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. In 2002, Alan Shearer opened the restored ward and people come to the hospital at Xmas to give presents to the young individuals. Ward director Carole Clayton said: "We only canat genuinely believe that somebody would stoop so low. The children and staff are heartbroken and upset and really angry. Shock were therefore pleased that the shirt was given to the ward and it has given satisfaction to the 1000s of individuals who've used the ward throughout the last 11 years - for somebody to take this just beggars belief. Amazement wish that somebody somewhere has details about the top even as we would love it to be returned." A Newcastle United spokesman said: aNewcastle United were very disappointed to know the news that a signed shirt has been stolen from the Childrenas Ward at North Tyneside hospital and would appeal because of its return at the earliest opportunity. aWeare told the children love taking a look at the clothing and frequently make an effort to identify the names of the people, such as Alan Shearer and Shay Given, therefore itas really a very questionable act by whoever was accountable for this thoughtless and mindless theft.a PC Andy Wait said: "This top was remarkably popular with the youngsters on the ward and we are appealing for the public's help to identify the heartless thief who took it. "We are asking everyone who saw anything suspicious at around the period, or who is offered the clothing available, to make contact with police on 101 ext 69191, or ring the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
