A California amateur champion, Venturi as an amateurish was the 54-hole leader at the 1956 Masters, eventually finishing second. He turned seasoned pro later that year. He also would finish minute in 1960.
Venturi won fifteen times as a professional, but is most commonly known for his insanely heroic finish at the 1964 US Open for Congressional. In oppressive Houston heat, Venturi suffered heating exhaustion and dehydration, but literally staggered for a 70 and a win.
After 1964, Venturi's career declined as he developed an incident of carpal tunnel problem. Surgery eventually repaired however, the problem, but he retired in 1967. Venturi then spent the other 35 years as a broadcaster for CBS Physical activities. That in itself was an exceptional feat, for Venturi had been inflicted by stuttering. His career at CBS was the lengthiest in sports broadcasting history.
Venturi was inducted into the World Golf Hall from Fame just eleven days ago. He was struggling to make the presentation.
