Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund looking at Champions League semis... - Victoria Times Colonist

FRANKFURT - Mario Gomez is back the limelight, after having a year of playing second fiddle to Mario Mandzukic. Gomez was wounded at the start of the summer season and Bayern Munich's new purchase Mandzukic used the chance to determine himself at the centre of Bayern's attack. Today, Bayern is taking a look at Gomez again because it accumulates to its Champions League seminal against Barcelona. Bayern and Borussia Dortmund are anticipated to relax their leading players in the Bundesliga week-end prior to the Champions League semifinals. While Dortmund plays Real Madrid the next day Bayern hosts Barcelona on Tuesday. In the Bundesliga, Bayern travels to Hannover bolstered by yet another big win after sweeping past Wolfsburg 6-1 to advance to the final of the German Cup. Dortmund hosts Mainz and is trying to all but seal second position. Bayern employed a second-string line-up a week ago against Nuremberg and won easily 4-0. Coach Jupp Heynckes then returned to his regulars and rolled over Wolfsburg. Gomez scored three targets inside six minutes while paying significantly less than 15 minutes on the area as a substitute for Mandzukic. Xherdan Shaqiri, playing for the hanging Franck Ribery, scored a goal and setup three. That leaves Heynckes wondering if maybe both could easily get in to the group for the Barcelona game. Gomez is expected to play anyway on Tuesday since Mandzukic is suspended. "I was not worried that Mandzukic can't play, because I've the second best Champions category scorer from last season (Gomez )," Heynckes said. Gomez might gain some more match training in Hannover. Also this week-end, Greuther Fuerth's relatively inevitable relegation could be confirmed. The club is nine points behind Hoffenheim and a reduction at nearby Nuremberg on Sunday would make it official. Higher up in the dining table, Schalke remains wanting to wrest away third position from Leverkusen, that will be four points ahead. Schalke didn't gain ground on Leverkusen last week when it'd to stay for a 2-2 draw at home and now moves to Eintracht Frankfurt, which will be wanting to keep a location in the Europa League. But Eintracht is in a heavy decline, having won just one of its last eight games, and is four points behind Schalke and three points behind Freiburg in sixth. "It is going to be close right as much as the end," Schalke goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand said. The most effective three areas provide primary slots in the Champions League, fourth place means qualifying. Locations five and six mean Europa League. Freiburg failed to secure a spot in the Europa League when it lost 2-1 at Stuttgart on Wednesday in the German Cup semifinals. That place was earned by stuttgart by qualifying for the ultimate against Bayern, which will perform in the Champions League again whilst the Bundesliga success. Schalke hasn't lost in 13 visits to Frankfurt. Eintracht's instructor Armin Veh has extended his contract in Frankfurt but the group is struggling to score goals. As it attempts an essential gain their leading scorer Alex Meier is missing because of an ankle injury and Frankfurt can experience issues. Freiburg has been the shock of the growing season using its no stars and small staff. It was outplayed in Stuttgart in the glass sport and could make amends when the two sides meet again on Sunday in Stuttgart. Borussia Moenchengladbach can still get a spot in the Europa League and journeys Friday to Augsburg, that is three points away from safety. On Saturday, Leverkusen hosts next-to-last Hoffenheim, Hamburg represents Fortuna Duesseldorf and Werder Bremen matches Wolfsburg. Neither Duesseldorf or Werder are safe. A Copyright 2013
